Abstract

1354970 Electro-depositing chromiumchromium oxide NIPPON KOKAN KK 6 July 1971 31755/71 Heading C7B A coated chromate treated metal sheet is produced by (a) cathodically treating a metal sheet in a chromic acid or chromate solution containing 10 to 100 g/l CrO 3 , and one or more of thiocyanic, thiosulphuric, dithionous, (this or pyro) sulphurous acid or their salts or a sulphide, with or without one or more of HF, H 2 SiF 6 , HBF 4 or their salts, in an amount of 1/500 to 1/25 of the CrO 3 , to form thereon a first layer of 0À5 to 1À5 mg/dm<SP>2</SP> metallic Cr, and a second layer on the first of hydrated Cr oxide of 0À1 to 0À8 mg Cr/dm<SP>2</SP>; and (b) immersing the chromate treated metal sheet into an aqueous solution of a film forming triazine-formalin or Ti or carboxylic acid modified acrylic resin, optionally containing one or more of a (di)chromate, molybdate, phosphate, titanate or oxyacid salt of a transition metal, and controlling the coating weight of resin, e.g. by squeeze-rolling and drying the film with hot air or baking it below 200‹C., to 0À05 to 2À5 mg/dm<SP>2</SP>. The sheet may be of steel, Zn, galvanized Fe, Al, Sn or Cu. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1258021.
