Abstract

A process for increasing the corrosion resistance of surfaces of steel, zinc, zinc alloys, aluminium and aluminium alloys comprises subjecting the surface of any of these metals separately or present together to the action of a phosphating solution which is capable of producing a chemically bonded crystalline phosphate coating on steel and zinc, rinsing with water the surface so treated, and then subjecting the rinsed surface to the action of a solution of chromic acid and complex fluorides selected from fluosilicic acid, fluoboric acid, fluozirconic acid, fluostannic acid, fluotitanic acid and the soluble salts of any of these, the chromic acid concentration lying between 0.30 and 10 grams per litre the fluorine content between 0.10 and 10 grams per litre and the pH of the solution lying between 1.3 and 4.0. The preferred complex fluorides are those of zirconium and titanium and the process is stated to produce surfaces which are well adapted to receive a final siccative coating of paint, lacquer or japan. Specifications 493,365, 501,739, 550,751, 554,654 and 645,157 are referred to.
