Abstract

An aqueous solution for de-oxidizing aluminium surfaces has a pH of 0.5-1.0 and contains hexavalent chromium in a concentration of 10-100 g/l., calculated as CrO3, and fluoride ions in such proportion between 0.1 and 0.6 g/l., calculated as HF, that the solution has an activity, i.e. ability to attack soda-glass, between the activities shown by solutions consisting of (a) chromic acid 30g., hydrofluoric acid (48.8 per cent) 0.25 ml., and water to make 1 litre, and (b) chromic acid 30g., hydrofluoric acid (48.8 per cent) 1.0 ml., and water to make 1 litre. The hexavalent chromium may be introduced as chromic acid or soluble salts thereof, such as potassium dichromate, ammonium dichromate, ammonium chromate and sodium chromate. The fluoride source may be hydrofluoric acid, simple salts thereof such as sodium, ammonium, or potassium fluoride, complex-fluoride acid such as fluoboric or fluosilicic acid or soluble salts thereof such as sodium silicofluoride potassium fluosilicate, potassium zirconium fluoride or ammonium silicofluoride. The pH of the solution may be adjusted by addition of acid, e.g. nitric acid. After deoxidizing, the aluminium may be coated using a fluoride-chromate coating solution.
