Abstract

An aqueous solution for producing a chromate conversion coating on a magnesium or magnesium-base alloy surface has a pH of 0.1-0.7 and contains 15.25 g/l hexavalent chromium (expressed as CrO3), at least 20 g/l chloride ion, and 0.8-1.5 grams of nitrate (expressed as NaNO3) per gram of chloride. The solution is used at a temperature of 60 DEG -100 DEG F., and is replenished so as to maintain a normality of 0.4-1.0 N when titrated against an alkali using Brom cresol green as indicator. Hexavalent chromium may be present in the solution as chromic acid and ammonium, sodium and potassium chromates and dichromates; chloride may be present as hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride and potassium chloride; and nitrate may be present as nitric acid and ammonium, sodium and potassium nitrates. The coatings are rinsed with dilute chromic and/or phosphoric acid if they are to serve as a basis for paint, lacquer, enamel, japan or the like. The two specified magnesium-base alloys contain (i) Al 3 per cent, Mn 0.3 per cent and Zn 1 per cent, and (ii) Al 5.3-6.7 per cent, Mn at least 0.15 per cent, Zn 2.5-3.5 per cent and Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Si together at most 0.3 per cent.
