Abstract

In a process for the protection against corrosion of magnesium and magnesium alloys, the metals are immersed in an aqueous solution containing nitric acid, chromic acid ions and .2 to 5 per cent. (by weight of the weight of water) of one or more chlorides. A bath containing 200 c.cs. nitric acid in one litre of water, 15 per cent. by weight of the total solution of sodium or potassium bichromate and 1 per cent. by weight of the weight of water of potassium chloride is stated to produce good results with a magnesium base alloy containing between 2 and 5 per cent. of aluminium. The amount of bichromate may vary between 2 and 25 per cent. by weight of the weight of total solution and the nitric acid between 70 and 300 c.cs. per litre of water. Specifications 287,450, [Class 82 (ii)], and 558,425 are referred to.
