Abstract
A base metal object (base metal is defined as iron, steel, zinc, aluminium, magnesium and alloys thereof) is treated in an acid pickling bath which contains, instead of or in addition to a corrosion inhibitor having a high inhibiting effect (i.e. corrosion preventing action of at least 50 per cent), a surface-active substance which is not an inhibitor having a high inhibiting effect, and is then transferred without rinsing to an acidic copper salt bath for copper plating. The copper plating may be carried out under currentless conditions or electrolytically. The surface-active substance may be non-ionic, auionic or cationic and many examples thereof are given.
