Abstract

Metal articles are abraded and rendered corrosion-resistant by tumbling in the presence of a solution containing one or more acid salts of phosphoric acids. The process is particularly applicable to iron and steel but articles of aluminium, magnesium, zinc, cadmium, copper and their alloys may also be treated. The solution may advantageously contain a wetting agent, preferably of the non-ionic type. Most favourable pH values range from 2.5-6.5 and may be controlled by additions of orthophosphoric acid. The treated articles may be rinsed in a bath containing chromic acid or a salt thereof and/or phosphoric acid or a phosphate.
