Abstract

A copper plating bath contains a copper salt, and sufficient alkali metal pyrophosphate to form the copper complex X6Cu(P2O7)2 where X is an alkali metal, and a small amount of 2-mercapto-thiazole or a hydrocarbon derivative e.g. 2-mercapto-benzthiazole. Other additions include ammonia; aliphatic amino acids or citric, tartaric, or oxalic acid; nitrate or nitrite ions. The pH value is 7.5 to 9, temperature 35 DEG to 60 DEG C., and current density generally up to 60 A.S.F. Surfaces of Al, Zn, Ni, Pb, or steel may be treated, and thick plates of Cu up to 1 inch may be applied. Top coats of Ni and Cr are referred to.
