Abstract

Metal surfaces are plated with two coats of nickel containing sulphur, the first coat containing less sulphur than the top coat. The sulphur is obtained from S=O compounds added to the plating bath, and consists preferably of organic sulphonates, sulphonamides, or sulphonimides, the second plating bath containing substantially more than the first and including a brightening agent, e.g. thiourea, selenium oxide and butyne diol, which induces sulphur retention in the nickel plate. The first coat is 0.5-2 mils thick, and the second 0.05-0.5 mils and contain respectively about 0.01-0.04% S and 0.04-0.15% S. The base metals plated include Al, Fe, Cu, Zn, or alloys thereof. The S-content is estimated by immersing the plated surface in an electrolyte and measuring the difference in voltage against a standard calomel electrode, of the two platings, the first layer being in the range -90 to -120 mV., and the second layer -140 to -200 mV.
