Abstract
783,807. Electroplating molybdenum and tungsten with nickel, cobalt and iron. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. April 27, 1955 [May 28, 1954], No. 12178/55. Class 41. Molybdenum and tungsten or alloys thereof are electroplated successively with copper and zinc or with brass, heated in a non-oxidizing atmosphere to 900-1000‹ C. until the zinc has volatilized completely and are then electroplated with nickel, cobalt or iron or alloys thereof. The metal to receive the coating is degreased in carbon tetrachloride, optionally followed by immersion in molten sodium nitrite, and then washing, or in the case of molybdenumrich alloys cathodic pickling in sulphuric acid. Successive flash coating of copper and zinc are deposited from acid sulphate baths, the zinc bath containing also ammonium chloride, sodium acetate and glucose, or a brass coating is deposited from an alkaline cyanide bath. Thereafter the zinc is volatilized and there is deposited a protective coating of nickel from a Watts bath, manganese-nickel from an acid sulphate bath, iron from an acid chloride bath, or cobalt from a boric acid-buffered cobalt sulphate bath containing sodium chloride.
