Abstract

Aluminium surfaces are prepared for electroplating by pre-treatment with an alkaline solution containing zinc oxide and an alkali metal gluconate, forming a zinc coating by chemical plating. The bath contains 10-200 g. ZnO and 2-20 g. or more of sodium gluconate per litre. Preferably the aluminium or alloy sheet is cleaned with a solution containing alkali, alkali phosphate and a wetting agent, rinsed, pickled in HNO3, rinsed, and then dipped in the alkali zincate bath for 1 minute at 75 DEG F. It is then electroplated in an alkali copper cyanide bath containing Rochelle salt. Cadmium, nickel, silver, zinc, tin or iron may be electroplated over the copper.
