Abstract

An article of aluminium or an alloy thereof is provided by immersion in a solution containing a nickel salt with a coating of nickel having a granular structure and a dull non-metallic appearance prior to electroplating with lead. An article of aluminium may be first degreased with trichlorethylene, then pickled in a ten per cent. solution of caustic soda, rinsed, neutralized in 40 DEG Be nitric acid and after again rinsing immersed in a saturated solution at 20 DEG C. comprising 400 gms. Ni Cl2, 40 gms. H3 BO3, 20 c.c. HF and 1,000 c.c. water. An article of a silicon-containing aluminium alloy may be similarly treated except that the neutralizing bath consists of 4 parts by volume of 48 DEG Be HNO3, 1 part of 48 per cent. HF and 10 parts of water.
