Abstract
Stainless steel is pickled in an aqueous solution containing sulphuric acid, nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid and 2%-10% by weight of ammonium ions. The ammonium ions may be introduced by adding ammonium trifluoride and/or ammonia or other ammonium salts and in this way hydrofluoric acid handling is avoided. A preferred pickling solution consists of by weight 15%-35% sulphuric acid, 5%-20% nitric acid, 5%-15% ammonium trifluoride which is equivalent to 2.5%-10% hydrofluoric acid, 0%-10% ammonium sulphate and 75%-20% water. The stainless steel is pickled in the solution in a single stage at 50 DEG C. Hydrochloric acid should not be present in the solution.
