Abstract
1,225,103. Etching Uranium. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. Aug. 4, 1969 [Sept. 6, 1968], No.38917/69. Heading C7E. U or U-based alloys are pickled by immersion in a bath consisting of an aqueous solution of FeCl 3 or of NiCl 2 and FeCl 3 , prepared by dissolving FeCl 3 .6H 2 O or NiCl 2 and FeCl 3 .6H 2 O in water, for a time sufficient to uniformly etch the surface of the article, which is then removed from the bath, rinsed in water, and immersed in a solution containing an iron-solvent for removing iron values carried out from the pickling bath. Preferably FeCl 3 .6H 2 O is used in 4À8 to 5À5 M solution at 30-60 C. for 10-15 minutes. For the mixed solution, concentrations of 3M NiCl 2 and 1À5M FeCl 3 are preferred. The iron-solvent may be HNO 3 .
