Abstract
PURPOSE:Hydrogen fluoride is added to wasted pickling solution in an amount of specific ratio to dissolved Fe and Cr in waste liquid, thereby to effect simple and easy separation of such metals as oxides without consuming acid ingredient. CONSTITUTION:To a wasted pickling solution for stainless steel, hydrofluoric acid is added at a room-or elevated-temperature, in a molar ratio HF/M of 3 or higher, preferably 4-5, wherein M represents metallic ion in wasted liquid, such that M=(Fe<3+> + Cr<3+>). The HF addition, by synergetic action with nitric acid existed in wasted liquid, easily precipitates Fe and Cr ions as FeF3 3H2O and CrF3 3H2O. The precipitate is separated and washed, then thermally hydrolyzed into hydrofluoric acid and metal oxides. The mother liquor containing excess hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid is circulated for use as pickling solution.
