Abstract

A solution for pickling ferrous metals has a pH of from 2.6 to less than 3.0 and comprises hydrochloric or sulphuric acid or a mixture of hydrochloric or sulphuric acid with hydrochloric acid or a salt thereof, together with a carrier selected from hydrazine, hydroylamine and salts thereof. The solution is useful in cleaning boiler installations and may be employed as such or in a two-stage process, the carrier being introduced alone in the feed water in the first stage and acid then being added thereto subsequently. If the pickling solution contains hydrofluoric acid or a salt thereof (e.g. ammonium fluoride or bifluoride), the metal is both de-scaled and desilicified. If the solution does not contain hydrofluoric acid the metal may be desilicified after pickling by treatment with caustic soda solution.
