Abstract
A pickling bath for aluminium or aluminium base alloys comprises 1-45% by weight HF, 30-99% by weight HNO3, 0.05-10% by weight hexavalent chromium and not more than 50% by weight water. The HF may be added as such or as ammonium acid fluoride NH4HF2 and the hexavalent chromium is added as chromic acid, chromic acid anhydride, or chromates and bichromates of sodium and potassium. Sulphuric acid, up to 10% by volume of the HNO3 content may be added and the solution is maintained at 60-130 DEG F. during the pickling process. The bath may be regenerated by adding fluoride and hexavalent chromium in an amount equal to 25% of the original concentration.
