Abstract
Alloy steel surfaces are cleaned and freed from scale by pickling electrolytically using as electrolyte a solution of neutral salts of mineral acids, and then a brief immersion in a strong mineral acid to remove the loosened scale. Preferably Na2So4 is used, but other salts of Na, K, or NH4 preferably giving a pH between 1 and 7 are usable. Small amounts of sodium fluoride or per-salts may be added to aid the formation of per-oxydisulphate which loosens the scale and passivates the surface. The final non-electrolytic treatment with mineral acid is effected for about 25 secs. at 40 DEG C. using H2So4, HNO3 or a mixture of HF and HNO3.
