Abstract
A method of regenerating spent pickling liquor which has been used to descale ferrous metal by contact in a sulphuric acid bath, comprises adding ammonium sulphate to cause precipitation of an iron ammonium sulphate. The temperature may be reduced to below 20 DEG C. to assist precipitation. After removal of the sulphate, acid and water may be added and the liquor used in further pickling operations. The added ammonium sulphate may be obtained as a by-product from coke ovens and auxiliary plant in steel works. A quantitative example is given.
