Abstract

A process for removing scale and/or rust from the interior surfaces of piping constructed of ferrous metals (other than stainless steel), or smoothing said surfaces or the interior surfaces of copper piping, or removing scale from the interior surfaces of copper or stainless steel piping, comprises passing through said piping a hot aqueous solution containing hydrogen peroxide and phosphoric acid and then removing residual hydrogen peroxide and acid by treatment of the interior surfaces of the piping with a neutralizing agent or with hot water. The preferred range of molecular ratios of hydrogen peroxide to phosphoric acid is between 1 : 3 and 1 : 1, the hydrogen peroxide being added to the solution as such or formed in situ, e.g. by the reaction of a metallic peroxide with an acid. The solution may also contain a non-ionic wetting agent and a finely-divided abrasive such as sand or pummice. Neutralization may be effected by treatment with (a) a dilute solution of alkali such as soda ash, caustic soda or trisodium phosphate, at 70 DEG -100 DEG C., (b) a dilute solution of alkali at ambient temperature followed by treatment with an organic solvent miscible with water such as methylated spirits, acetone or isopropyl alcohol, or (c) water at 70 DEG -100 DEG C. According to the Provisional Specification a subsequent polishing may be effected by treatment with a solution comprising oxalic acid and hydrogen peroxide. Specification 375,599 is referred to.
