Abstract

An aqueous alkaline solution for cleaning metals (e.g. Cu, Fe, Al and Zn) contains (a) an alkali metal metasilicate (preferably Na2SiO3), (b) an alkali metal phosphate or polyphosphate or borax (preferably Na3PO4), and (c) a minor proportion (0,1-1g./l.) of a mixture of surface active agents. (c) comprises (1) a condensate of an alkyl phenol with 8-11 ethylene oxide units (40-70% of the mixture), (2) a condensate of an alkyl phenol with 1-3 ethylene oxide units (10-30%) and (3) a condensate of a C16-18 fatty alcohol with 50-80 ethylene oxide units (20-40%). 1-20 g./l. Na2SiO3,5H2O may be present and the ratio <FORM:0916203/III/1> is preferably greater than 1. The bath may be used from 120 DEG -180 DEG F. Specification 878,307 is referred to.ALSO:An aqueous alkaline solution for cleaning metals (e.g. Cu, Fe, Al or Zn) contains an alkali metal metasilicate (preferably Na2SiO3), an alkali metal phosphate or borax (preferably Na3PO4) and a minor proportion (0.1-1.0 g.p.l.) of a mixture of surface-active agent. These last comprise (1) a condensate of an alkyl phenol with 8-11 ethylene oxide units (40-70% of the mixture), (2) a condensate of an alkyl phenol with 1-3 ethylene oxide units (10-30%) and (3) a condensate of a C16-18 fatty alcohol with 50-80 ethylene oxide units (20-40%). 1-20 g.p.l. Na2SiO3.5H2O is used and the ratio Na2SiO3.5H2O/Na3PO4 is preferably greater than 1. The bath may be used at a temperature of 120-180 DEG F. Specification 878,307 is referred to.
