Abstract

Metal surfaces are cleaned to remove pickling acid, oxidation or scale, and then coated with a film of glycerol or glycol. The metal articles are passed through a pickling tank and two washing tanks; the first washing tank may contain only water or a neutralising solution of an alkali, while the second washing tank contains water, preferably hot, and glycerine or glycol in proportions of 0.25 per cent. to 2 per cent. by volume. To precipitate suspended or colloidal particles in the latter solution a small proportion of a precipitating agent such as a mixture of aluminium sulphate, sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate may be used.ALSO:Metal surfaces are cleaned to remove pickling acid, oxidation or scale, and then coated with a film of glycerol or glycol. The metal articles are passed through a pickling tank and two washing tanks. The first washing tank may contain water to remove the pickling acid or a neutralizing solution, and the second contains a solution of water, preferably hot, and glycerine or glycol in proportions of 0.25 per cent to 2 per cent by volume. The neutralizing solution is preferably maintained at a temperature between 180 DEG and 212 DEG F. and may contain caustic alkali to which may be added an ordinary soap and/or a wetting agent. Suitable wetting agents are soapless soaps, sodium metaphosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate, and sodium salts of sulphated alcohols. To precipitate suspended or colloidal particles in the neutralizing solution or in the polyhydric alcohol solution, a small proportion of a mixture of aluminium sulphate, sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate may be added.
