Abstract

Metals, such as steel, aluminium and zinc and their alloys, are cleaned or etched by immersion in aqueous alkali having a layer of liquid saturated hydrocarbon floating on its surface. The alkali and hydrocarbon may contain a surface-active agent, e.g. an ethylene oxide/fatty alcohol condensation product or a secondary alkyl sulphate. Specified alkalis are sodium hydroxide, orthosilicate, carbonate and chromate. Since the hydrocarbon reduces fuming of hot alkali baths, it is advantageously dyed to give warning that the baths are hot. Concentrates suitable, on dilution with water, for making up the baths are disclosed.ALSO:Metals, such as steel, aluminium and zinc and their alloys, are cleaned or etched by immersion in aqueous alkali having a layer of liquid saturated hydrocarbon floating on its surface.
