Abstract
Nickel plating baths include as a brightening agent a condensation product formed between (1) an unsaturated aliphatic alcohol or carboxylic acid up to 6 C atoms, and (2) a 1 : 3 dioxolane or a derivative containing a methyl or hydroxy methyl group. Examples of (1) are alkyl alcohol, butyne diol, butene diol, propangyl alcohol, methyl pentynol, or acrylic, itaconic, propiolic or maleic acid. An acid catalyst is used in the condensation, e.g. boron triflouide etherate. Other optional brightening agents, e.g. bromal, coumarin, sulpho-compounds or formaldehyde may be added; numerous examples of sulphonic acids and sulphonamides and also their zinc, nickel, or alkali metal salts are given.
