Abstract

A zinc surface, which may be a zinc coating on steel, is treated with a chromic acid solution, rinsed with water, alcohol or other inert liquid, and before the surface is dry subjected to the action of an aqueous solution of an alkaline silicate, preferably at 120-180 DEG F. The chromic acid solution may also contain a persulphate and a wetting agent such as licorice powder or quillaja extract and the silicate solution a wetting agent, e.g. a sulphonate or an alcohol sulphate.
