Abstract

337,461. Wade, H, (Gravell, J. H.). Aug. 2, 1929. Removing paints.-Paint is removed by treating painted surfaces with a mixture comprising an alkaline hydroxide and a phenol, particularly cresylic acid. In a modification the mixture may comprise sodium hydroxide and sodium cresylate, formed from a mixture of cresylic acid and excess of sodium hydroxide. A suitable bath consists of 700 lbs. of water, 250 lbs. of sodium hydroxide and 70 lbs. of cresylic acid. The bath is maintained at about 180‹ F. and the surface immersed therein until the paint is removed, after which washing with water is carried out. After washing and before drying a treatment with dilute acid, preferably phosphoric acid, to neutralize alkalinity, may be effected. Suitable proportions for making the mixture in paste or powder form are given. The composition is especially useful for removing asphaltic japans from steel automobile bodies. fenders, &c.
