Abstract

Stainless steel surfaces are treated with an aqueous solution of nitric and hydrofluoric acids, washed and then treated with an oxalate-forming solution. Treatment with an aqueous solution of sulphuric or nitric acid, with or without chloride ions, may precede, and treatment with an aqueous solution of nitric acid may immediately follow, the treatment with nitric and hydrofluoric acids and, if the surface is scaled, it may be pre-treated by immersion in molten alkali followed by quenching in water. The oxalate coating may be formed by means of the solution described in Specification 661,385. The treatment may precede plastic deformation.
