Abstract
Platinum catalysts, especially of the type in which the finely-divided metal is supported on silica gel for use in the oxidation of sulphur dioxide to sulphur trioxide, are activated or re-activated by treatment with a solution containing ammonium oxalate and/or acid ammonium oxalate. The process may comprise a preliminary treatment with hot ten per cent. nitric acid, digestion with the oxalate solution at a temperature close to, but not above, its boiling point, drying at about 120 DEG C, and heating to temperatures up to 400 DEG C, the digestion and heating steps preferably being repeated one or more times. The catalyst is washed with pure water before and after the treatments with the acid and the actuating solution. Acid ammonium oxalate may be formed in situ by mixing solutions of ammonium oxalate and oxalic acid, and free oxalic acid may also be present. Saturated ammonium oxalate solution, or a solution containing 10-20 grams each per litre of ammonium oxalate and oxalic acid are suitable for use in the process.
