Abstract
Activated silica is obtained by precipitating silica at ambient temperature from an alkali metal silicate by means of an organic acid washing the silica with water, drying below 250 DEG C., activating by boiling with a solution of an organic acid having a concentration of 5 per cent. by weight or less washing again with water and drying below 250 DEG C. Acetic acid is preferred for both preparation and activation but tartoric or sulicylic acids may be used. The alkalic metal silicate, preferably sodium, may be prepared by the action of the corresponding base on silicon tetrafluoride and thus be iron-free. After use, for example, as an absorbent of hormones, the silica may be reactivated by boiling with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide having a concentration of 5 per cent. by weight or less, and activating with the organic acid as above.
