Abstract

Zinc peroxide is produced by adding zinc oxide or hydroxide to a solution of hydrogen peroxide containing an acid which forms a water-soluble zinc salt, or a water-soluble zinc salt in several portions, each portion being small relative to the total hydrogen peroxide. Equimolecular amounts of oxide and hydrogen peroxide are preferred, the oxide portions in general not exceeding 20 p.c. by weight of the total. The solution preferably has a peroxide concentration of 10-15 p.c. and an acid or zinc salt concentration of 2-25 gms. per litre. Hydrochloric, sulphuric or nitric acids may be used. Stabilisers, e.g. sodium silicate may be added. The temperature is preferably above 30 DEG C. but below 70 DEG C. Prior processes of drying a mixed paste of zinc oxide and hydrogen peroxide and precipitating zinc peroxide from alkaline solution with hydrogen peroxide are referred to. The Provisional Specification describes the use of insoluble zinc compounds instead of zinc oxide.
