Abstract
Potassium hydrogen fluoride is prepared by reacting fluosilicic acid with potsssium fluoride in aqueous solution. Preferably the fluosilicic acid and potassium fluoride are present in a molar ratio of 1:4. The potassium fluosilicate simultaneously formed is precipitated and may be removed and may be reacted with potassium hydroxide to form further potassium fluoride, silica being formed and removed. The potassium fluoride may also be formed by reaction of fluosilicic acid with potassium hydroxide, silica being removed as before. Preferably the fluosilicic acid is employed at 70 DEG C. as a 20% by weight aqueous solution. Such a solution may be obtained by passing gases resulting from phosphate and super-phosphate production into water after having removed impurities with a cold concentrated sulphuric acid scrub.
