Abstract
Boric acid is produced in a cyclic process from an aqueous solution of sodium borate containing CO2 having an Na2O : B2O3 molar ratio within the range 0.3 : 1 to 0.38 : 1, which comprises, alternatively increasing and decreasing the temperature of the solution within the range 25-75 DEG C. and increasing or decreasing in the same sense the pressure of CO2, sodium bicarbonate being removed from the solution at stages of higher pressure and temperature and boric acid being removed at stages of lower pressure and temperature, and a sodium borate addition and, if necessary an addition of water sufficient to ensure that the amount of water present is equal to the stoichiometric requirement for the reaction of CO2 and sodium borate, being made in each cycle. Pressures of 30-615 p.s.i.a. of CO2 are preferably employed and in those cycles where sodium borates such as sodium tetraborate are employed the requirements of water is satisfied by the addition in each cycle of controlled amounts of a mixture of sodium borate penta-and deca-hydrates. The sodium borate addition may be made at any convenient stage in the cycle which may also be started at any desired stage. The process may be continuous or operated batch-wise. Specific examples are given of the preparation of a solution of sodium borate at a particular CO2 pressure and temperature and having a predetermined composition of boric acid mother liquor based on calculations from formul given for any particular temperature and pressure, followed by either (a) the addition of sodium borate to the solution, together with an increase in the temperature and CO2 pressure to effect crystallization of the sodium bicarbonate which is removed and thereafter lowering the temperature of the mother liquor and CO2 pressure to their original values to effect crystallization of the boric acid which is also removed, the mother liquor being recycled, or (b) increasing the temperature and CO2 pressure to crystallize the sodium bicarbonate which is removed, adding sodium borate to the mother liquor, lowering the temperature and CO2 pressure to their original values, crystallizing the boric acid and removing it and recycling the mother liquor.
