Abstract
A process for the production of b -hydroxyethylhydrazine comprises continuously introducing hydrazine and ethylene oxide and if desired water into one end of an elongated reaction zone and removing the reacted mixture from the further end. The hydrazine may be employed as an aqueous solution and preferably as hydrazine hydrate. The mol. ratio of hydrazine to ethylene oxide is preferably within the range from 5:1 to 50:1, the effluent from the reaction zone being fractionated to recover excess hydrazine hydrate which is recycled to the reaction zone. The reaction is preferably conducted at a temperature within the range from 30 DEG to 100 DEG C. and under a pressure ranging from atmospheric to 50 p.s.i.g. The reaction zone is preferably packed with a suitable packing, e.g. Berl saddles.
