Abstract

The invention comprises anisoles fluorinated in the o -position. They are prepared by reacting an o : o : o -trihalogen-anisole which contains at least one chlorine atom in the o -position and of which the other o -halogen atoms are chlorine and/or fluorine atoms, with anhydrous hydrogen fluoride at a temperature of 120 DEG to 220 DEG C. under a pressure of 30 to 100 atmospheres. An excess of 5 to 200 per cent hydrogen fluoride containing not more than 2 per cent of water is used. The starting material may contain chlorine in the nucleus, in which case the product also has chlorine in the nucleus. In examples hydrogen fluoride is reacted (I) with p-chloro-o : o : o -trichloroanisole to obtain p-chloro - o : o : o - trifluoroanisole and p-chloro - o : o : o - difluorochloroanisole; (2) with 2 : 4 - dichloro - o : o : o - trichloroanisole to obtain 2 : 4 - dichloro - o : o : o - difluorochloroanisole; (3) with 2 : 4 - dichloro - o : o : o - difluorochloroanisole to obtain 2 : 4 - dichloro - o : o : o - trifluoroanisole; (4) with 2 : 4 - dichloro - o : o : o - trichloroanisole to obtain 2 : 4 - dichloro - o : o : o - trifluoroanisole and 2 : 4-dichloro-o : o : o -difluorochloroanisole.
