Abstract

Perhaloacetones of the formula C3OCl6- xFx, where X is 1 to 6 are made by heating in the vapour phase one or more perhalogenated acetones containing 0 to 5 fluorine atoms and no halogen other than chlorine and fluorine with substantially anhydrous hydrogen fluoride in the presence of a catalyst consisting of dichromium trioxide at a temperature of 250-550 DEG C. To produce primarily hexafluoroacetone and pentafluorochloroacetone, the preferred starting materials are perhalogenated acetones containing 0-4 fluorine atoms, and the reaction is effected at 250-450 DEG C. Suitable starting materials are specified. The hydrogen fluoride is preferably employed in an amount not substantially more than 100% in excess of that theoretically required for perfluorination. Detailed examples are given. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 976,316.
