Abstract

Fluorochloroethylenes are made by passing vaporized fluorochlorethanes over heated surfaces. Substances having large surfaces are preferred, e.g. active carbon and silica gel, and activators, e.g. metal salts such as chlorides and particularly alkaline earth metal or copper chlorides may be present. Specified temperatures are 200-300 DEG C. or higher. In examples 1-fluoro-1,1,2,2-tetrachlorethane is passed through (1) a copper p tube containing copper turnings at 470 DEG C. to yield fluoro-trichlorethylene; (2) active carbon containing barium chloride at 300 DEG C. to yield fluoro-trichlorethylene; and (3) active carbon containing strontium chloride at 240 DEG C. to yield 1,1-difluoro-2,2-dichlorethylene.
