Abstract
Alkali metal cyanates are produced when alkali metal salts of urea are heated. Potassium cyanate formation commences at about 75 DEG C., and sodium cyanate at about 95 DEG C.ALSO:Alkali metal salts of urea are prepared by intimately mixing solid urea with a solid alkali metal alcoholate having at most 3 carbon atoms in a state of fine subdivision, and reacting the mixture at below 100 DEG C. The sodium salt is advantageously prepared at below 95 DEG C., and the potassium salt advantageously below 75 DEG C. A minimum temperature of 25 DEG C. is apparently necessary. Moisture is preferably absent, and reduced pressure may be used.
