Abstract
In the manufacture of hydrazine by reacting sodium hydroxide successively with chlorine and ammonia, the hydrazine is dehydrated with sodium hydroxide and the resulting aqueous sodium hydroxide is used in the manufacture of further hydrazine. The aqueous solution of hydrazine first produced may be concentrated, before treatment with sodium hydroxide, by distillation to give a solution of up to 64 per cent strength. If anhydrous hydrazine is desired sodium hydroxide is added in the proportion of at least one mole of sodium hydroxide to each mole of water present. The resulting mixture when heated above 60 DEG C forms two liquid layers the upper layer consisting predominantly of hydrazine and the lower of sodium hydroxide monohydrate. The upper layer may be removed by distillation under reduced pressure at a temperature between 60 and 80 DEG C to give substantially anhydrous hydrazine.
