Abstract
Butadiene is made by reduction of vinyl acetylene with solutions of compounds of divalent chromium. Weakly acid, neutral or ammoniacal solutions may be employed. Normal or slightly increased temperature may be used, and atmospheric or increased pressure. The chromic compounds formed may be reduced, e.g. by electrolysis or zinc and acid, and re-used. This reduction may be effected in the reaction mixture. In examples, aqueous solutions containing chromic sulphate and excess sulphuric acid are electrolytically reduced and treated with vinyl acetylene in a cycle or until a saturated solution is obtained which is allowed to stand at 25 DEG C., gas containing butadiene commencing to escape after a short time and further gas after reducing the pressure.
