Abstract
Zinc is removed from cadmium by treating the impure cadmium in molten state with a substance such as caustic soda which reacts with the zinc but not with the cadmium, any iron present being eliminated at the same time. Contact between the metal and reagent may be effected by covering the metal with the reagent and injecting water or caustic soda solution; or the molten metal may be pumped through a layer of molten caustic soda, or the two may be otherwise agitated together mechanically or by means of a gas. The spent soda may be dissolved and treated with carbon dioxide for the production of zinc carbonate, and the sodium carbonate obtained may be reconverted to caustic soda and used again in the process.ALSO:Zinc is removed from cadmium by treating the impure cadmium in molten state with a substance such as caustic soda which reacts with the zinc but not with the cadmium, any iron present being eliminated at the same time. The treatment may be applied until the amount of zinc remaining is 0,003 per cent or less.
