Abstract
541,403. Decolorizing charcoals. TATE & LYLE, Ltd., and WHALLEY, H. C. S. DE. March 19, 1940, No. 5115. [Class 90] Bone charcoal which has been used for decolorizing, e.g. of sugar liquors is regenerated or improved by impregnation with nickel as such or as an oxide or sub-oxide. and subjecting it to treatment at 300-660‹C. with hydrogen or gases containing a large proportion of hydrogen. The charcoal may be treated with an aqueous solution of a nickel salt and a solution of an alkali metal carbonate or hydroxide &c. to precipitate an insoluble nickel compound, the soluble salts being removed by washing. The hydrogen may be obtained from producer or water gas by electrolysis, or by passing through the charcoal, or saturated low-pressure steam through scrap iron or steel &c. The charcoal may be graded by " Kipp-Kelly " separation, the denser materials being discarded.
