Abstract
Sodium cyanide is recovered from its ammoniacal aqueous solutions by removing the ammonia from the solution whereby sodium cyanide containing water of crystallization separates, and then recovering the solid sodium cyanide from the mother liquor. The ammonia may be expelled by passing an inert gas through the solution (e.g. carbon dioxide-free air) and/or by the application of reduced pressure. The temperature should not exceed 40 DEG C. during the removal. The cooling effect of the removal of the ammonia promotes the crystallization and this effect may be increased by the use of heat-insulating vessels. The NaCN.2H2O may be converted into the anhydrous salt, preferably by treatment with anhydrous or gaseous ammonia which produces a pulp consisting of the anhydrous salt and its saturated ammoniacal aqueous solution which can be separated from each other. The solution may be returned to the process.
