Abstract

Urea is produced by the reaction of CO2 with NH3, in stoichiometric amounts or using excess ammonia, to form an effluent containing urea, water, and unreacted CO2 and unreacted NH3 wherein unreacted CO2 and NH3 are separated from the effluent for re-use in producing urea, comprising subjecting the effluent to a first rectification at a gauge pressure of 10 Kg/cm.2 to 25 Kg/cm.2, at a head temperature of 90 DEG C. to 130 DEG C. and a still temperature of 130 DEG C. to 170 DEG C. to drive off NH3 and CO2 leaving a depleted liquid; subjecting the depleted liquid to a second rectification at a gauge pressure to 0 to 3 Kg/cm.2, a head temperature of 60 DEG C. to 110 DEG C. and a still temperature of 100 DEG to 140 DEG C. to drive off the remaining CO2 and NH3 leaving an aqueous solution containing urea, removing from the aqueous solution an amount of water equal to the water produced in the urea synthesis reaction to form a concentrated urea solution, separating urea from the concentrated urea solution by crystallization leaving a urea mother liquor, absorbing the CO2 and NH3 from the second rectification in the urea mother liquor to gauge pressure of 0 to 3 Kg/cm.2 to form an absorbate, absorbing the CO2 and NH3 from the first rectification in the absorbate at a pressure of 10 to 25 Kg/cm.2 to form a solution containing CO2 and NH3 for re-use in the production of urea. It is preferred to wash the gas recovered from the second absorbing step with a portion of the said liquor to remove CO2 therefrom and to liquefy the NH3 recovered from the second absorbing step and to use it in the production of urea. The heat of absorption evolved in the second absorbing step may be employed to evaporate water from the solution in the second rectification stage. Some of the water may be removed for preference from the urea solution at an absolute pressure of 40 to 100 mm. mercury, and the urea is for preference separated from the said aqueous solution by crystallization and centrifugation. The invention is described with reference to a flow sheet (not shown).
