Abstract

Biuret-enriched urea mother liquor, obtained after separation of a biuret-impoverished urea by crystallization from a urea synthesis product comprising an aqueous solution of urea and biuret, is recycled to a stage in the urea synthesis which favours the conversion of biuret to urea. Such a stage is preferably characterized by pressures of 5 to 300 atmospheres, temperatures of between 100 DEG C. and 200 DEG C. and the presence of free ammonia. Such conditions may be provided in the autoclave during the synthesis of urea from ammonia and carbon dioxide or in high pressure distillation or scrubbing towers leading from the synthesis autoclave. The biuret-containing mother liquor may be used to absorb unreacted carbon dioxide or other reactants before returning it to the synthesis autoclave. Specification 885,691 is referred to.
