Abstract

Propylene is dimerized at superatmospheric pressure in the presence of aqueous phosphoric acid and of added isopropyl alcohol. In a continuous process isopropyl alcohol may be separated from the products and recycled. Conditions may be 250 DEG -400 DEG C., 50-500 atmospheres, 0,1-5 hours, 5-58% phosphoric acid in about equimolar amounts with propylene or less and a molar ratio of propylene to isopropyl alcohol of 20-0,4.
