Abstract
Water-insoluble quinacridones free from sulphonic acid groups are made by heating a compound of the formula <FORM:0896803/IV (c)/1> where R1 is hydrogen or an aliphatic or aromatic residue, and R2 is an aryl residue in which at least one position ortho to the -NH- group is unsubstituted, in the presence of oleum, sulphuric acid of 75%-100% strength or an acid of the formula Z-SO3H where Z is chloro or alkyl or a residue of the benzene or naphthalene series, and, when a product containing a -SO3H or -SO2Cl group is formed, splitting off such a group by heating the product with a dilute mineral acid under superatmospheric pressure.
