Abstract

Peracetic acid is obtained by the reaction of hydrogen peroxide with acetic acid in the presence as the peracetic acid formation catalyst of at least 1 per cent by weight of the acid form of a cation exchange resin based on the total weight of the reactants, said resin being resistant to oxidation and substantially insoluble in the reaction medium. In carrying out the process the required amount of cation exchange resin in its acid form is first added to the acetic acid and the necessary amount of hydrogen peroxide is then added. The reaction mixture is then preferably stirred while being maintained at about room temperature and when the desired peracetic acid concentration is reached the peracetic acid solution is filtered off from the ion-exchange resin, which resin after washing and regenerating with strong acid may be used again in the process. Specified types of ion exchange resins are phenolic methylene sulphonic types and nuclear sulphonic types and examples are given in which these types of cation exchange resin are used, the amount of resin present ranging from 1 per cent to 50 per cent by weight of the reactants.
