Abstract

2,6-Dichlorobenzonitrile is made from 1-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetrachlorocyclohexanecarbonamide-1 (Specification 1,066,811) by converting the latter into 2,6-dichlorobenzamide by loss of water and hydrogen chloride, and then converting the 2,6-dichlorobenzamide into 2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile in known manner. The conversion of the initial carbonamide into 2,6-dichlorobenzamide may be effected by dry heating but is preferably effected in a solvent. A dehydrating catalyst may be present, a number being specified. A description is given of the preparation of 1-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetrachlorocyclohexanecarbonamide-1 from 2,2,6,6-tetrachlorocyclohexanone by treating the latter with sodium cyanide to yield 2,2,6,6-tetrachlorocyclohexanone cyanhydrin, and reacting this compound with sulphuric acid. Examples are then given of the preparation of 2,6-dichlorobenzamide from the carbonamide named above and of the conversion of the benzamide derivative into 2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile by treatment with a dehydrating agent, e.g. phosphorus oxychloride.
