Abstract

A catalyst comprises iron-free colloidal silica, freshly precipitated copper oxide and a waterinsoluble barium compound. The barium compound, which may be barium naphthenate or barium carbonate, is between 1 and 50% of the copper present as oxide, and the copper oxide is between 5 and 30% of the silica. The catalyst may also contain 10 to 20% by weight of sodium silicate based on the weight of silica. In examples, catalysts are obtained by mixing a suspension of colloidal silica with precipitated copper oxide and precipitated barium naphthenate or barium carbonate, and drying and crushing.ALSO:Acrylic acid is prepared by passing a mixture of steam and maleic acid vapour at a temperature of 200 DEG to 300 DEG C. over a catalyst comprising iron-free colloidal silica, freshly precipitated copper oxide and a water-insoluble barium compound. The vapour mixture contains 0.5 to 8 per cent of oxygen, and the ratio of water to maleic acid is between 1.5 and 3 : 1. The p barium compound, which may be barium naphthenate or barium carbonate, is between 1 and 50 per cent of the copper present as oxide, and the copper oxide is between 5 and 30 per cent of the silica. The catalyst may also contain sodium silicate. In examples a mixture of oxygen with steam and maleic acid vapour, obtained by boiling a solution of maleic acid, is passed over catalysts obtained by mixing a suspension of colloidal silica with precipitated copper oxide and precipitated barium naphthenate or barium carbonate, and drying and crushing.
