Abstract

292,059. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Jan. 31, 1927. Divided on and addition to 265,233. Mono-esters of glycol or its homologues are prepared by heating alkylene oxides with organic carboxylic acids in the presence of a mineral acid such as sulphonic acid, or an acid salt thereof such as sodium bisulphate, or a salt of a strong base with an organic acid other than that to be esterfied. The reaction may be conducted under pressure. According to the example, ethylene oxide is passed into hot acetic acid containing sulphuric acid, yielding glycol monoacetate.
